HEALING TOGETHER: SCAMMED IN PURSUIT OF SERVICE TO GOD

I have faced numerous rejections in various aspects of life, including business, work, relationships, and friendships. However, one experience stands out as particularly eye-opening. This is what happened...

Upon completing my tertiary education and national service, the next big thing was to get a job. I turned down three (3) other job opportunities and relocated from Cape Coast to Accra to work for a Christian Bible NGO because I believed it would be more fulfilling to serve God in this capacity. For me, it was the ideal place to begin my professional work journey as a zealous young believer in Christ.

My first three (3) days at the office was confusing. I was told by the director that I would be the national campus coordinator. The next day, I was informed by the director that I have been tasked to create fake Christian stories for publication.

Six (6) days later, I was assigned to travel from Accra to Cape Coast to organise a seminar for all churches especially at the university campuses. I was given more than fifty (50) letters for distribution to the churches in Cape Coast and the fee for participation in the seminar was GHS50.00.  After distributing this letters, they advised me to go to all the churches and ask them for the list of participants which I did reluctantly. I eventually got some interested participants.

Three (3) days before the programme, I reminded my superiors about the need to make payment to secure the venue but the Director's initial response was to pretend that he didn't have any knowledge of the event. There were only twenty (20) participants on the list at the time. Meanwhile most of the churches had initiated that they could not confirm their availability until the day of the event. This left me confused and stranded because I was racing against time and could not communicate the new development to the invited churches.

On the scheduled day for the event, I arrived at the venue and more than fifty (50) participants turned up. However, to my utmost amazement, representatives from the Christian Bible NGO did not make an appearance. I was left to apologise to the participants that the programme had been rescheduled due to unforeseen circumstances.

I returned to Accra after spending two (2) weeks on this assignment. When I got to the office, I was informed that they were relocating to a new office. The next day, I was asked to read some online stories. I found them to be very emotional. The Director asked me to begin creating similar stories for publication to raise funds for the organization. By this incident, I realised that I was at the wrong place. I refused to write those stories and was replaced by a new female staff a week later.

With immense disappointed I left Accra and returned to Cape Coast. It dawned on me after my experience that perhaps most of those stories online seeking to raise funds for some of these Christian NGOs are not real stories after all. My disappointment was mainly because I wanted to work for God but had to experience that unfortunate ordeal. I encountered several obstacles after that job loss and was unemployed for years.

Eventually after six (6) years of unemployment as a graduate, I ventured into full time farming. It has been the best decision I have made in my career and ten (10) years after taking that bold step to farm, I have no regrets.

That strong desire I have always had to serve God remained intact and with proceeds from my farm, I established an evangelism ministry to serve my calling. I also went back to school to obtain a master’s degree in counselling to augment the missionary ministerial role I undertake. Now, I provide free counselling sessions for friends, family, students and would-be couples.

Lessons Learnt:

  • In life, we need to identify our purpose and work on it while relying solely on the Holy Spirit for direction.
  • Beware of organisations with Christian names and branding as they may not always be genuinely working for Christ. Some of them are purely business entities with corrupt leadership.
  • As Christians, it is important to develop the virtue of patience when we face difficult challenges.
  • We must be discerning and persevere to achieve our goals even if it means taking on challenging or unpopular jobs.

I can't believe this is real life! We are in times where, as Christians, what we must desire more than anything, is intimacy with Jesus so that our discernments are SHARPENED! Thank you for sharing this story and lessons.
Unfortunately it is a real life incident. Rightly said. We must be intentional with building an intimate relationship with God lest others take undue advantage of us. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
